SUMMARY:Infants’ Relationship Inferences from Observations of Imitation and Helping
DESCRIPTION:Human adults rely heavily on their social partners to meet the challenges of the world. This dependency people have on their social network highlights the need to initiate and nurture strong relationships. One critical challenge for fostering healthy relationships is determining who would be a good (or bad) social partner. Adults have the advantage of drawing upon their lifetime of experience and knowledge to inform their judgments of others\, but a person’s motivation to begin mapping their own social network may emerge in infancy. I will discuss two related lines of work that provide evidence that infants use their 3rd-party observations of imitation and helping to understand who is likely to act as a good social partner in the future. \nBill Pepe 4th-year PhD candidate at the University of California\, San Diego (UCSD)\, works with advisor Dr. Lindsey Powell in the Experimental Psychology department. His research program focuses primarily on early human concepts of social relationships and morality: examining how infants and children use their observations of peoples’ social relationships to guide their expectations and reasoning about prosocial and antisocial behavior. \nRegister now.

DESCRIPTION:The Development\, Individual Differences\, Relationship-based (DIR®) Model\, co-created by Drs. Serena Wieder and Stanley Greenspan\, has always centered parents and caregivers as the essential relationships that underpin development.\nFacilitating Attuned Interactions (FAN) is a conceptual framework and training model for improving the communication skills of professionals who serve families. Developed by Linda Gilkerson\, PhD of Erikson Institute\, FAN has been used across the US and internationally as a tool for helping professionals feel more connected and responsive to families. \nCombining FAN with the DIR® Model amplifies practitioners’ resources for supporting families. Professionals feel more effective in their work and parents are ready to read their children’s cues and know at any given moment how to respond to their needs. \nThe goal of the DIR+FAN Training is to build professional capacity in reflective practice to strengthen our relationships with parents\, supporting DIR’s parent-mediated intervention and coaching model. With DIR+FAN\, DIR® practitioners can attune to the parents’ experience of the DIR® Model\, while holding parents’ concerns about a child’s development\, challenging behavior\, and other concerns at the center of their practice. This innovative training builds better relationships between professionals and parents\, and ultimately between parents and their children\, because it helps providers adapt to clients’ needs in the moment and stay emotionally in tune. DESCRIPTION:DC:0-5 Intensive Overview Training\nwith Sharon Shadwell\, LMHC \nThis Overview Training on DC:0-5™ Diagnostic Classification of Mental Health and Developmental Disorders of Infancy and Early Childhood will provide participants with an overview of the background\, approach\, and content areas of DC:0-5™. It is particularly helpful for professionals in understanding the importance of developmentally appropriate assessment and diagnostic practices for infants and very young children. Participants will learn about infant and early childhood mental health and the emotional and behavioral challenges very young children may experience and will consider how this knowledge informs their roles in working with infants\, young children\, and their families. This training will support professionals to spot the early signs of distress in young children and feel more comfortable and confident in making referrals to mental health services when indicated. SUMMARY:The Ripple Effect
DESCRIPTION:This workshop presents an integrative framework for understanding and communication across systems about how trauma can affect a child\, a family\, and a system. The framework was developed by Chandra Ghosh Ippen\, Christopher Layne\, and Bob Pynoos of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) and is adapted from core trauma concepts identified and ratified by the NCTSN Core Curriculum on Childhood Trauma Task Force. The Ripple Effect translates complex trauma concepts using metaphor\, visual models\, common language\, and rich case example and shows: 1) the domains of functioning affected by trauma; 2) the mechanisms through which trauma affects development; and 3) intervention pathways. This workshop offers foundational trauma knowledge for providers and highlights ways to share trauma theory with family members and across systems (e.g.\, schools\, child welfare\, mental health\, medical system\, judiciary\, police) as we work jointly to lessen the impact of trauma exposure. SUMMARY:Supporting children with alcohol and/or drug exposure and their families: An informed approach to intervention and supports
DESCRIPTION:Prenatal substance exposure (PSE) can have long-term impacts on a person’s development and supporting children and families impacted by PSE requires a shift from traditional approaches in parenting\, therapy intervention\, and family support. Approximately 1 infant is diagnosed with neonatal abstinence syndrome every 24 minutes\, and about 1 in 7 pregnant people report drinking alcohol. The high prevalence of PSE means it’s likely current providers have these children on their current caseloads\, even if they aren’t aware of it! \nAfter completing this training\, participants will be able to identify the impacts of prenatal drug and/or alcohol exposure on a developing child and provide support\, interventions\, and resources that meet these children and their families’ needs.
