SUMMARY:A Journey of Post Traumatic Growth
DESCRIPTION:Barnard Center FREE Lecture Series Presents: A Journey of Post Traumatic Growth \nWhat does it mean to move through developmental trauma into awareness and then sequentially resolving traumatic exposure? Shame and self forgiveness\, going from a perception of flawed to adaptive\, learning unconditional regard\, identifying mentors\, identifying discomfort and learning the sequence of establishing good habits for someone with a central nervous system built in chaos. We will look at these things that we see\, experience and grapple with in our work with challenging environments and the humans that get built in them. \nFrank Grijalvacame through the California system as a child adopted into a family challenged with mental health and substance abuse issues. Raised in the East Bay area of Northern California\, Frank attended 9 different schools in his first 9 years. Raised in a home of significant physical and mental abuse\, Frank’s first training was in threat detection and an upregulated central nervous system. This gives Frank a unique perspective that translates for many of our most traumatized communities\, families\, and children. After high school\, Frank found his way into the military. His first professional training was as a special warfare diver attached to the Marine Mammal program of the United States Navy where he spent 8 years learning behavior modification skills\, stress management and understanding the dynamics of nonverbal communication that began the journey to self awareness. Later\, as a stay at home dad for 2 kids and a student of psychology\, he became aware of and struggled with development\, his own trauma exposure\, and behavioral progressions and sequencing. This led to a journey of self-exploration and an academic focus on psychological trauma. Frank has worked with the International Trauma Center since 1999 and deployed to Ground Zero to manage a team of clinicians working with a federal agency in “the dig” to stabilize them ongoing as they did their difficult work. Frank also worked extensively throughout Louisiana and Mississippi in the aftermath of Katrina. Through the International Trauma Center Frank has worked abroad in Israel\, Gaza and the West Bank\, Nepal\, Jordan\, Haiti and several other countries for agencies like Save the Children\, USAID\, the World Bank and the International Center for the Protection of Victims of Torture to learn interventions in complex situations and train as well as be trained by clinicians from all over the world working with children and families. SUMMARY:Infants’ Relationship Inferences from Observations of Imitation and Helping
DESCRIPTION:Human adults rely heavily on their social partners to meet the challenges of the world. This dependency people have on their social network highlights the need to initiate and nurture strong relationships. One critical challenge for fostering healthy relationships is determining who would be a good (or bad) social partner. Adults have the advantage of drawing upon their lifetime of experience and knowledge to inform their judgments of others\, but a person’s motivation to begin mapping their own social network may emerge in infancy. I will discuss two related lines of work that provide evidence that infants use their 3rd-party observations of imitation and helping to understand who is likely to act as a good social partner in the future. \nBill Pepe 4th-year PhD candidate at the University of California\, San Diego (UCSD)\, works with advisor Dr. Lindsey Powell in the Experimental Psychology department. His research program focuses primarily on early human concepts of social relationships and morality: examining how infants and children use their observations of peoples’ social relationships to guide their expectations and reasoning about prosocial and antisocial behavior. \nRegister now.

SUMMARY:DIR + FAN
DESCRIPTION:The Development\, Individual Differences\, Relationship-based (DIR®) Model\, co-created by Drs. Serena Wieder and Stanley Greenspan\, has always centered parents and caregivers as the essential relationships that underpin development.\nFacilitating Attuned Interactions (FAN) is a conceptual framework and training model for improving the communication skills of professionals who serve families. Developed by Linda Gilkerson\, PhD of Erikson Institute\, FAN has been used across the US and internationally as a tool for helping professionals feel more connected and responsive to families. \nCombining FAN with the DIR® Model amplifies practitioners’ resources for supporting families. Professionals feel more effective in their work and parents are ready to read their children’s cues and know at any given moment how to respond to their needs. \nThe goal of the DIR+FAN Training is to build professional capacity in reflective practice to strengthen our relationships with parents\, supporting DIR’s parent-mediated intervention and coaching model. With DIR+FAN\, DIR® practitioners can attune to the parents’ experience of the DIR® Model\, while holding parents’ concerns about a child’s development\, challenging behavior\, and other concerns at the center of their practice. This innovative training builds better relationships between professionals and parents\, and ultimately between parents and their children\, because it helps providers adapt to clients’ needs in the moment and stay emotionally in tune. It also helps professionals reflect on the meaning of a client’s behavior\, and it helps them find more compassion for themselves through self-regulation.\n\nThe DIR+FAN training originated in a special initiative developed through a partnership between Profectum’s Senior Advisor and co-creator of the DIR® Model Serena Wieder and FAN creator Linda Gilkerson of the Erikson Institute\, along with Profectum’s Faculty members Rebecca Berg\, Socorro Cornejo\, and Kristin McNally. \nPowerful outcomes of DIR+FAN Course include:\n\n\nDeveloping parents’ understanding of child and self\n\n\nBuilding parents’ confidence and capacity to manage uncertainty\n\n\nStrengthening parent-child relationships\n\n\nCourse Format: \n\n7 live online 2-hour sessions (5/9\, 5/23\, 6/6\, 6/20)\n4 training sessions\n3 mentoring sessions (7/1\, 7/25\, 8/8 or 7/18\, 8/1\, 6/15)\nAll sessions must be attended\nFAN Training Modules\nDIR+FAN Reflective Learning Tools
